Marlin in Puerto Vallarta - 2009

The fish was caught on two rods with four people fighting him. 21 foot Panga. No fighting chairs, belts, or harness. The fish died after about 2 1/2 to 3 hours of fighting. We had him on two 50W Shimanos with 500yd of 100lb mono on each. Took another hour and half for them to hand line him up off the bottom. We had him hooked on both rods for about 30-40 minutes before he ever realized he was hooked. He just kept feeding on the skipjack (bonita) on top. What a sight! Finally fed up to where he got sight of the boat, AND SON, ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE! Agonizing to say the least. Most painful thing in my life short of a kidney stone. The fish was a little over 13 ½ feet, 81” girth, and said it weighed 1,180lbs (had to take it to a local cattle slaughter house because we couldn’t hoist him high enough to clear his bill to get an accurate weight). The trip cost us $125.00 a piece. We originally set out to catch rooster fish in the bay for $100.00 apiece and the captain told us for $25.00 apiece more he would run us out to catch a yellow fin which all of us agreed to do. We’re glad we did.
